The Importance of Internships

One of the more frustrating moments college students experience comes close to graduation day, when students realize how competitive the market has become and that job options are more limited than previously thought. It is a known fact that employers now look for more than a college degree when interviewing job candidates, and place particular emphasis on skills acquired through work experience. According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), internships rank as the second most important quality in a candidate behind communication skills. It should then be no surprise that the more experience a candidate has, the greater the likelihood that they’ll be hired in the field of their choice.

By participating in an internship, the chances of receiving a full-time job offer from an employer drastically rise. Currently, employers are extending job offers to nearly 70 percent of graduates with internship experience (NACE). Starting salaries of students having completed internships are on average 7% higher than those who do not have experience; thereby demonstrating that candidates who make an effort to gain experience are rewarded. Moreover, students who have completed internships report a higher level of satisfaction with their jobs, as interns have had the opportunity to take the time to focus on particular job interests and abilities, and are left with greater knowledge on which direction to move their future careers.
